Piers Morgan

At the beginning of this interview Piers Morgan asks Cheryl Cole “How are you feeling?” she replies “Terrified” and he asks “Why?”. You can see from the way she is answered this first question and the way she is sat that she feels very awkward and looks uncomfortable. He asks about her personal life with mostly closed questions, because he is asking such specific questions this shows he is controlling how the interview goes. Piers Morgan says “...this has turned you into a style icon” then Cheryl Cole replies “But I don’t think I’m a style icon” then Piers Morgan asks the audience “Ladies is she?” they all reply with “Yes”. Asking these questions are building up her confidence so she feels comfortable in the interview, also they’re not serious questions they’re quite light-hearted. He the n goes onto talking about how much she spends on clothes; he tries to make some of the questions and responses quite humorous. Further into the interview he talks about her career and deeper into her personal life which then ends up in Cheryl Cole being upset. The questions he asks are really investigative as he is trying to find out details about her life. The style of this interview is entertaining also, because it is a chat show with a live audience.

This interview is very structured; he asks closed questions for the introduction just to get her to feel more relaxed in front of him and the audience. Then he asks some development questions which builds her confidence, for example when he talks about her being a style icon. Further into the interview the key questions get asked, then towards the very end there is a summary and the windup.

Piers Morgan uses a few communication skills during the interview; he sits quite comfortably in his chair while Cheryl Cole is sat with her legs cross. Although, Piers Morgan leans forwards slightly when asking questions which could make Cheryl Cole feel a bit intimidated. He responds to Cheryl Cole with a nod of saying ‘yes’ ‘hmm’ while she is speaking which shows that he is still listening and hasn't switched off, this is active listening. He also uses his hands when he speaks which is also to do with body language and active listening.

Jeremy Paxman

Jeremy Paxman Interviewing Nigel Farage – Click here to open the link

This interview starts off with a few single / closed questions, the first question Jeremy Paxman asks is “Your slogan, we want our country back, back from whom?” he then asks another question “What’s your problem with Romanians?” Jeremy Paxman is asking the questions and is controlling what is said within the interview because he is asking specific questions that people want to hear answers to. He also uses a lot of statements that Nigel Farage has tweeted of previously said in other interviews to get a reaction from him. Towards the end of the interview Jeremy asks “Let me ask you this one personal question, you explained away some of your difficulties last week by saying you were very tired” The Nigel Farage replies with “Well do you know something often you get into interviews with aggressive interviewers, you know the sort of people I’m talking about..” he used a little bit of humour there aiming that answer at Jeremy Paxman being the ‘aggressive interviewer’. Because of the questions asked in this interview and the way they are answered we know that the style of interview is very combative because Jeremy Paxman sometimes disagrees and argues with Nigel Farage to get a better reaction and answer that people want to hear. This interview is also hard news because the topic of the conversation is politics.

The structure of this interview is quite different compared to the previous one; it doesn’t really have an introduction. Jeremy Paxman goes straight into starting the conversation with development and key questions.

The interviewer is sat relaxed in his chair with his leg crossed; he did this to make the guest feel a bit more comfortable during the interview. They both interrupt each other when they’re speaking when they’re both trying to get their point across.

Alan Carr

At the very start of the interview Alan Carr offers both Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum a drink. He does this to ensure the guests on his show feel comfortable and less nervous. Only a few minutes into the interview Alan Carr asks a few closed questions that make the guests and audience laugh just to gets the conversation flowing. He then asks a suggestive question “we’ve gotta’ talk about your new film, 22 Jump Street” and an open question “Explain what jump street is”. Asking these questions will get Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum to give a bit more information about the new film and talk about it in a positive way which would not only promote the film but could changes people mind about watching it. Further into the interview Alan Carr asks both the guests questions individually. He asks Channing Tatum “You do your own stunts don’t you?” Channing Tatum replies “yes” then Alan Carr asks “Why?”. The first question was quite closed so he only got a short answer so then he asked why to get more of an in depth answers. Alan Carr then tells Jonah Hill “I loved you in The Wolf of Wall Street”. This is also promoting the film.

This type of interview is very entertaining as it is a chat show and there is live audience but it is also very light hearted and promotional because he asks questions that make the guests / audience laugh and asking questions about films they star in. The interviewer structured the interview in quite a specific way. First was the introduction and making them feel comfortable, then was the development questions to build up to the key questions, the summary and windup came after.

The interviewer used a few communication skills for example, he sat back in his chair, he didn’t look stiff he looked comfy and relaxed. He did this to make the guests feel comfortable. He was also actively listening, meaning when the guests were speaking he would respond saying ‘yes’,  ‘hmm’ or nodding to show he was listening.
